I-10 ::: Project Description
Segment 1: I-10 from Rest Areas to west of Old Bainbridge Road
A third lane in each direction is being added from a point just east of the Rest Areas to a point just west of Old Bainbridge Road. The resulting six lane limited access facility will provided much needed increased capacity to I-10. The additional lanes are being constructed within the existing right of way. In order to accommodate the additional lanes the I-10 bridges in the work zone will be widened. Storm water retention ponds will be constructed and sound barrier walls and high mast lighting will be installed.
Interchange Improvements:
SR 263 (Capital Circle Northwest)
A continuous two-lane entrance ramp from northbound Capital Circle to eastbound I-10 will be constructed. A two-lane westbound exit ramp in the northeast quadrant with a triple left-turn lane to southbound Capital Circle and a single right-turn lane to northbound Capital Circle will also be constructed. These interchange improvements coincide with the improvements to Capital Circle NW, which are scheduled to be completed by July 2007. Bicycle and pedestrian facilities will be added on Capital Circle NW from the Commonwealth Blvd. intersection north, through the interchange.
Segment 2: I-10 from Old Bainbridge Road to Meridian Road
Beginning at the eastern project limits of Segment One, a third lane in each direction will be added from just west of Old Bainbridge Road to just west of Meridian Road extending the six lane facility. The Monroe Street Overpass will be widened to accommodate the additional lanes and improved, two lane ramps. Additionally, Monroe Street approaching the interchange will be widened to accommodate the new, safer geometry of the interchange ramps. Storm water retention ponds will be constructed as well as MSE and sound barrier walls. High mast lighting will be installed to replace the existing ramp and interstate lighting.
Interchange Improvements:
US 27/SR 63 (Monroe Street)
The six existing through lanes which pass over I-10 at this interchange will be maintained. The existing loop ramps in the northeast and southwest quadrants will be replaced with new ramps which will have consistent radii throughout the loop which will improve safety conditions. The eastbound and westbound I-10 exit ramps will be relocated and the existing bicycle and pedestrian facilities at this interchange will be maintained.
Segment 3: I-10 from Meridian Road to Capital Circle N.E.
Beginning at the eastern project limits for Segment Two, a third lane in each direction will be added from just west of Meridian Road to a point just east of Capital Circle. The improvements include the removal and replacement of the two I-10 bridges which span Thomasville Road, the construction of on and off westbound ramps, the widening of Thomasville Road to accommodate the new ramps, the widening of the Capital Circle overpass and the construction of a new signalized intersection at Capital Circle and the new ramps which are adjacent to Halstead Boulevard. As with the all the segments, storm water retention ponds will be constructed as well as MSE and sound barrier walls to minimize impact to the area. High mast lighting will also be installed to improve street lighting.
Interchange Improvements:
US 319/SR 61(Thomasville Road)
The design for this interchange is complex due to the proximity of an elevated Capital Circle NE and an at-grade Thomasville Road both in close proximity along I-10. The following improvements will be constructed for this interchange:
- The existing westbound I-10 exit ramp which currently passes under Capital Circle NE and connects directly to Thomasville Road will be widened to two lanes, prior to Capital Circle NE. These lanes will split: a new three lane ramp will connect directly with Capital Circle NE at a signalized intersection; while a single ramp will continue to Thomasville Road.
- A new westbound I-10 entrance ramp will be constructed at Capital Circle NE. This ramp will consist of three lanes and will cross over the westbound I-10 exit ramp and Thomasville Road on a new bridge structure. This ramp will merge with the westbound I-10 entrance ramp from southbound Thomasville Road and provide a single merge point on I-10.
- The north leg of the Capital Circle NE ramp terminal intersection will accommodate four northbound through lanes and six lanes in the southbound direction. These six lanes will be split between through movements and right-turn lanes to access I-10 westbound. The existing Killearn Center Boulevard ramp to Capital Circle NE and the bridge over I-10 will be widened.
- The south leg of the Capital Circle NE ramp terminal intersection will accommodate three through lanes in the southbound direction and five lanes in the northbound direction (three through and a dual left to I-10 westbound). The Capital Circle NE bridge over I-10 will also be widened.
- The eastbound approach at Raymond Diehl Road and Capital Circle NE will include an additional right turn lane to Capital Circle NE. To avoid right-of-way acquisition in this area, the intersection will be shifted 12 feet to the north. Additionally, the eastbound I-10 entrance ramp from Raymond Diehl Road will be widened to two lanes.
- The existing eastbound I-10 exit ramp at Thomasville Road will be widened to two lanes, the inside lane will split off to become a triple left turn movement for the northbound Thomasville Road. The outside lane will have two through lanes to Raymond Diehl Road and one right turn to southbound Thomasville Road with a 500' acceleration lane.
- Thomasville Road will be widened to ten lanes within the limits of the ramp terminal intersection at I-10. The five southbound lanes on Thomasville Road will have three through lanes and two left-turn lanes to eastbound Raymond Diehl Road. Northbound Thomasville Road will have four through lanes and one left turn lane.
- The existing westbound I-10 entrance ramp will include a continuous right-turn lane from southbound Thomasville Road. A single left-turn lane from northbound Thomasville Road will merge with the continuous entrance ramp. This lane will merge with the new entrance ramp from Capital Circle, and continue onto I-10 westbound.
Bicycle and pedestrian facilities are present in this interchange location and those facilities will be reconstructed with the new interchange design.
